Construction Theatre

The Project Summary

The project aims to be a continuation of the work produced in previous years which is to further develop a cultural community and art centre for Weston Island, Bath. Weston Island is located to the west of the city of Bath. Its currently being used as a Bus Depot, however the proposal aims to redevelop the site into an art and community centre for woodworking and boatmaking. The socio-economic divide between the north and south of the island is to be broken by opening the site through green space and improved transportation links. Overall, the island is to be transformed so that it is more accessible and usable, while ensuring stable economic value to a previously deprived part of Bath.

The project aims to be as sustainable as possible, reusing existing materials, using the weir’s hydro power and providing safe spaces for protected plant and animal species. Being situated on an industrial strip in Bath, with previous uses also being of industrial use (timber and brass mills), the island is to be once again established as a timber and craft community centre, providing spaces for art, workshops, sculpture, woodworking and boatmaking. The facilities are to accommodate local residents and artists, providing a space for skills to be practiced and taught. The project aims to rejuvenate the River Avon, using it as an asset to transport people and materials around Bath like it did throughout history.
